Most people who need a power systems study have never bought one before. Corporate EHS asked for the arc flash assessment date, or an insurer flagged it at renewal, or a plan reviewer wants selective coordination demonstrated. Now there is a line item to budget and three proposals to compare, written in language that makes them look interchangeable. They are not.

Price on this work is driven by a short list of things: how many protective devices get modeled, how many services and voltage levels feed them, how many sites are in scope, how hard the gear is to reach, and whether a usable model already exists. Device count is the main lever, which is why any firm quoting without counting devices is quoting a guess. Ask whether the fee is fixed or hourly, and what happens to the price when the device count comes in higher than the proposal assumed.

Scope is where proposals actually differ. Read for these: is the data collected in the field or lifted from your drawings; are labels printed and installed or shipped in a box; who seals the report and are they licensed in the state where the facility sits; do you receive the native model files or does the next update require going back to the same vendor; is a coordination review included or is the study incident energy only. Two proposals ten percent apart on price can be a hundred percent apart on what arrives. The cheapest desktop study is the one you pay for twice, because it cannot be defended and cannot be updated.

The same questions apply from the other side of the table.
